“Damn.” My eyes shoot down, and Lebanon is thankfully dozing again. If his first word is a curse word, Mama Sugar will have my hide. Hell, my momma would probably come down from Heaven and whip me too.

Jonas clinches his jaw. “I didn’t expect you’d want me to read it to you.”

“You wrote it. You’re the only one I’d want to read it. It’s beautiful.”

He lowers his head. “I wanted to be a great poet like Langston Hughes or Paul Lawrence Dunbar, but I don’t have that talent. Though once in a great while something or someone—” he looks over at me “—gets me to put pen to paper.”

“No matter why you did it, it’s nice to have something beautiful with all the ugly.”

Lebanon’s doze was only a temporary reprieve, and he squirms. He reaches for Jonas, who looks at me.

“Go on.”

Jonas takes Lebanon. Their faces, the way their smiles freely consume them, reveal an honest joy, a pure one. Yes, beautiful among the ugly. You find it in the small things when it seems there is something so big you feel it might break you. Beauty in the ugly. Beauty in the small moments. The grace in a cup of hot tea or a clean, warm blanket or a ride home.

I lay my head on Jonas’ shoulder as he holds Lebanon. You can find salvation without a church or a Bible.
